What Are the Ten Gods in BaZi? Derivation and Meanings

The Ten Gods are relationship labels derived from the Day Master's element and polarity. They describe functions within a chart, not fixed personalities or outcomes.

Abstract BaZi Ten Gods relationship map cover with the Day Master at the center and ten relationship lines connecting personality, career, and intimacy themes

The Ten Gods are derived relationship labels

The Ten Gods are not supernatural beings. They are ten relationship labels derived by comparing each stem with the Day Master through the Five Elements and yin-yang polarity. Depending on that relationship and the rest of the chart, the same symbol can describe support, expression, resources, authority, or peer dynamics.

If the Day Master itself is unfamiliar, begin with what the Day Master means. The Ten Gods can only be derived from that reference point.

The five element relationships create five role families. Yin-yang polarity then splits each family into two, which produces the ten names.

What the five role families describe

  • Peer: similarity, autonomy, cooperation, competition, and boundaries.
  • Output: expression, production, creativity, challenge, and what the self sends outward.
  • Wealth: practical exchange, tangible goals, resources the self manages, and results. Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth are separated by polarity.
  • Authority / Officer: rules, pressure, standards, responsibility, and what restrains the self. Direct Officer and Seven Killings are separated by polarity.
  • Resource: support, learning, protection, interpretation, and what nourishes the self. Direct Resource and Indirect Resource are separated by polarity.

These are relationship functions. A visible role can become helpful, excessive, blocked, or demanding depending on season, placement, strength, combinations, and timing.

For an applied example of how several roles become a bounded personality reading, see how to read personality from the full BaZi chart.

Worked example: Jia Yang Wood Day Master

For a Jia (甲), Yang Wood Day Master, the ten stems map as follows:

Compared stemElement and polarityTen God
Jia 甲Yang WoodFriend
Yi 乙Yin WoodRob Wealth
Bing 丙Yang FireEating God
Ding 丁Yin FireHurting Officer
Wu 戊Yang EarthIndirect Wealth
Ji 己Yin EarthDirect Wealth
Geng 庚Yang MetalSeven Killings
Xin 辛Yin MetalDirect Officer
Ren 壬Yang WaterIndirect Resource
Gui 癸Yin WaterDirect Resource

This table establishes only the relationship name. It does not mean each stem automatically produces a fixed personality, career, relationship, wealth result, or life event.

Why context changes meaning

Season and strength come first. A role supported by the Month Branch may be more available, while the same role out of season or under pressure may operate differently.

Placement and visibility come next. A stem visible above the chart can be easier to observe, while a role held in a branch may be more layered. The Hidden Stems reference shows exactly which stems are stored in each branch before their Ten Gods roles are derived. Combinations and flow also matter: Output can generate Wealth, Resource can support the Day Master, and Authority can interact with both pressure and structure.

Add timing after the natal relationships are understood. Luck Pillars and annual influences may activate a role, but that activation supplies context rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Using the Ten Gods in a report

A report may apply Ten Gods to temperament, relationships, career, wealth, and timing, but every section should trace back to the same derivation. The labels help examine how someone handles support, expression, exchange, pressure, and peers. They do not decide which career, partner, or future event must occur.

For an applied use of these roles without a star-to-job lookup table, see how BaZi approaches career.

Which Ten God is best?

None is universally best. Any role can be useful, excessive, blocked, or demanding depending on the Day Master, season, chart structure, and timing.

Why can the same stem be a different Ten God?

The stem itself does not carry one permanent Ten God. Its role is recalculated from its element and polarity relationship to the chart's Day Master.

Derive first, interpret second

Start with the Day Master and apply the element relationship, then use polarity to choose the specific name. Interpret the role within the full chart only after completing that mechanical derivation.
