BaZi Basics: How Your Birth Time Becomes a Four Pillars Chart

A BaZi chart is a calculated structure

A BaZi chart converts the year, month, day, and hour of birth into four pillars. Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, creating the Eight Characters used in later interpretation. This page covers the chart's structure. How birth data becomes four positions

The calculation uses the local birth date and time, birthplace, timezone, and relevant daylight-saving context. Calendar rules then derive the four positions:

• The Year Pillar is determined through the stem-branch calendar rather than a zodiac label alone.
• The Month Pillar follows solar-term boundaries rather than simply matching a Western calendar month.
• The Day Pillar comes from the continuing stem-branch day cycle.
• The Hour Pillar combines the Day Stem with the local two-hour branch after applicable time handling.

Near an hour, midnight, or solar-term boundary, the calculation assumptions can affect a pillar. Place and time therefore need to be handled while building the chart, before any interpretation.

The labeled Four Pillars structure

Read each card vertically. The Heavenly Stem is the upper character, and the Earthly Branch is the lower one. Together, the four cards form the chart.

The four positions are not four independent predictions. Their stems, branches, season, combinations, and element relationships form one chart.

Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

The ten Heavenly Stems are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. Each combines one of the Five Elements with yin or yang. They form the more visible upper layer of the chart. The 10 Day Masters reference compares them when they occupy the Day Stem position.

The twelve Earthly Branches are Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai. Branches also relate to season, two-hour periods, directions, zodiac animals, and hidden stems. They are not just animal signs. The Hidden Stems reference lists the exact contents used for all 12 branches.

Where the Day Master, Five Elements, and Ten Gods fit

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem in the Day Pillar. It gives later interpretation a center, but it does not describe the entire person by itself.

Every stem and branch carries Five Element information. After the chart is built, those elements can be examined for season, support, restraint, production, and flow. The Ten Gods are then derived by comparing element and polarity relationships with the Day Master.

What the raw chart does and does not show

A raw chart can show the Four Pillars, Eight Characters, Day Master, stems, branches, hidden stems, Five Elements, and derived relationships. It does not automatically explain which pattern is most important, how different signals interact, or how timing changes the context. Why are there eight characters in a Four Pillars chart?

Each of the four pillars contains two characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Four pairs therefore create eight characters.

Is the Month Pillar just the calendar month?

No. BaZi month boundaries are tied to solar terms, so they do not simply begin on the first day of a Western or lunar month.

What happens when birth time is unknown?

The Year, Month, and Day Pillars can still be calculated from the available data, but the Hour Pillar and hour-dependent details remain uncertain and should be presented that way.

Structure before interpretation

Begin by locating the characters in the Year, Month, Day, and Hour positions. From there, identify the Day Master and seasonal context. The interpretation sequence makes sense once this anatomy is clear.
