What Is the Spouse Palace in BaZi?
The Spouse Palace is the Day Branch, including its Hidden Stems and chart relationships. It offers one relationship lens, not a portrait of a guaranteed partner or a marriage forecast.
The Spouse Palace in BaZi is the Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar. It is one place to study relationship themes in a single birth chart because it contains Hidden Stems and can form relationships with other branches. It is not a guaranteed partner portrait, a compatibility score, or a marriage forecast.
The Day Pillar contains two different reference points. The stem above is the Day Master, which anchors the Ten Gods. The branch below is the Day Branch, commonly called the Spouse Palace or Marriage Palace. Confusing the two leads to faulty derivations before interpretation even begins.

Where the Spouse Palace sits
A BaZi chart has four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem above an Earthly Branch.

Calling the Day Branch a palace does not make it an isolated compartment. It remains part of the same chart. Month order sets the seasonal background, the other branches may interact with it, and its Hidden Stems take their Ten Gods names from the Day Master above.
What is inside the Day Branch
Every Earthly Branch contains one to three Hidden Stems. These stems add calculated Five Element and Ten Gods relationships beneath the visible row of four Heavenly Stems. The Spouse Palace is therefore not just a branch name such as Si, Shen, or Chou. It has internal contents.
The calculation follows a fixed sequence:
- Identify the Day Master from the Day Stem.
- Expand the Day Branch into its Hidden Stems.
- Compare each Hidden Stem with the Day Master to derive its Ten Gods role.
- Read those roles alongside their position, season, visibility, roots, and the rest of the chart.
The complete contents of all twelve branches are listed in the Hidden Stems reference. Schools may differ in the weight they give the main, middle, and residual qi, so a list of hidden roles should not be treated as a universal scoring formula.
Hidden roles are not partner traits
Suppose a Day Branch contains Direct Wealth, Rob Wealth, or Hurting Officer relative to the Day Master. Those are structural relationships between stems. They may give a reader useful questions about exchange, peers, expression, or boundaries. They do not mean a future partner will possess a matching personality, job, appearance, or life history.
Traditional schools sometimes connect particular Ten Gods with spouse terminology according to gender-specific rules. Such rules are school-dependent and cannot stand alone as InnerCipher's public product contract. The chart still cannot identify a guaranteed partner from one hidden role.
Why the branch label is not enough
A twelve-branch lookup table can be convenient, but it leaves out most of the calculation. The same Day Branch can function differently when the surrounding chart changes.
- Season: the Month Branch changes which elements are timely or supported.
- Day Master strength: the same hidden role can meet a well-supported or heavily drained Day Master.
- Other pillars: visible stems and the other branches may repeat, support, control, drain, or combine with the Day Branch contents.
- Roots and visibility: a role hidden only in the Day Branch is not identical to the same role exposed in a Heavenly Stem and rooted elsewhere.
- Chart Structure: the higher-order pattern changes which relationships organize the chart.
- Timing: a luck pillar or annual pillar can introduce a temporary relationship to the Day Branch without changing the natal chart itself.
This is why "Day Branch equals spouse type" is too crude to support a reading.
Combinations, clashes, punishments, harms, and breaks
The Spouse Palace may form a combination, clash, punishment, harm, or break with another natal branch. These are formal branch relationships. They describe how two chart positions connect, pull, pressure, or unsettle one another under a defined set of rules.
None of those labels is an event by itself. A clash does not automatically mean separation. A combination does not guarantee harmony or marriage. A punishment is not proof of betrayal, and a break does not supply a breakup date.
The full pair and group rules belong to the BaZi combinations and clashes guide. In a Spouse Palace reading, their narrower purpose is to show that the Day Branch does not operate alone.
Worked example: one pair, three recorded relationships
Consider this reproducible chart input:
- Birth clock: January 3, 1988 at 16:00
- Place: Tianjin, China
- Time zone: Asia/Shanghai
- True solar time used for pillar calculation: about 15:44
- Four Pillars: Ding Mao / Ren Zi / Ding Si / Wu Shen
The Day Stem is Ding Fire, so Ding is the Day Master. The Day Branch is Si, making Si the Spouse Palace for this chart.

These three roles describe calculated contents of Si relative to Ding. They are not three claims about a partner.
The Hour Branch is Shen. Under InnerCipher's current natal branch rules, the same Si and Shen pair is recorded as a combination, a punishment, and a break. The chart does not ask us to select the most dramatic label and discard the others. It shows that several structural signals can coexist between the same two positions.
Because the Si-Shen pair carries three labels, none of them can establish an event on its own. From that pair alone, we cannot conclude that a person will marry, separate, meet a certain partner, or experience a specific relationship event. Plausible readings must remain plural: the pair may organize questions about connection and friction at once, or it may become more noticeable when later timing repeats one of the branches. The rest of the chart and lived circumstances decide which questions are relevant.
Natal structure and timing are different layers
The birth chart records the natal Spouse Palace and its relationships. Luck pillars and annual pillars add temporary stems and branches. A timing branch may repeat, combine with, clash, punish, harm, or break the Day Branch.
This can mark a period when relationship questions, boundaries, domestic arrangements, or interpersonal pressure deserve more attention. It cannot establish what event will occur. The same timing relationship could coincide with a new commitment, a renegotiated routine, a demanding family period, or no prominent romantic event at all.
Timing also cannot create a two-person compatibility result from one chart. Comparing two people is a separate task and is outside the scope of this article and InnerCipher's single-chart relationship analysis.

Common mistakes
- Reading only the branch animal: the zodiac label omits Hidden Stems, Ten Gods, season, and all other chart relationships.
- Turning a hidden role into a partner profile: Ten Gods are relational categories, not identity records for a future person.
- Calling every clash a breakup: a clash is a structural relationship and needs whole-chart and timing context.
- Treating a combination as a marriage promise: connection in the chart does not prove a legal or romantic event.
- Using one chart as a compatibility test: another person's behavior and the interaction between two people are not contained in a single birth chart.

Can the Spouse Palace describe my future spouse?
Not as a reliable portrait. Its Hidden Stems and chart relationships can support relationship questions, but they cannot identify a person's appearance, personality, job, birth details, or identity.
Does a clash to the Spouse Palace mean divorce?
No. A clash indicates a formal branch relationship. It does not specify an event, and it must be read with the whole natal chart, timing layer, and real circumstances.
Can timing show the exact year of marriage?
Timing can show when a chart position receives new support or pressure. It cannot guarantee a marriage or supply a dependable wedding date.
