What Is Chart Structure (Ge Ju) in BaZi?

Chart Structure, called Ge Ju (格局) in Chinese, is an overall structural classification for a BaZi chart. It summarizes how the Month Branch, its Hidden Stems, visible Heavenly Stems, and Ten Gods relationships fit a defined pattern. It is not a verdict on character, status, or the quality of a life.

What a Chart Structure label summarizes

A raw BaZi chart gives four pillars, a Day Master, stems, branches, and their stored contents. Chart Structure asks whether those facts form a recognizable overall arrangement under the method being used.

InnerCipher begins with the Month Branch because it carries the seasonal order. The method then compares its Hidden Stems with the chart's visible stems and derives their Ten Gods roles relative to the Day Master. A limited set of special conditions is checked before the regular month-order path.

This makes Chart Structure narrower than a complete reading. It does not replace Five Elements analysis, Day Master strength, combinations and clashes, life-area interpretation, or timing. The step-by-step chart guide shows where structure belongs in the wider sequence.

The chart facts needed before structure can be determined

InnerCipher needs several established facts before assigning a label:

• the Day Master, which supplies the reference point for Ten Gods;
• the Month Branch and its seasonal position;
• the ordered Hidden Stems inside that Month Branch;
• all four visible Heavenly Stems;
• the Ten Gods relationship between the Day Master and each relevant stem; and
• whether a limited special-structure condition is met.

The label is therefore derived, not selected from a personality quiz. Changing a pillar can change the visible stems, the Month Branch contents, and the resulting structure.

How InnerCipher currently determines Chart Structure

BaZi schools differ on pattern names, priorities, purity, and transformation requirements. The order below documents the method currently used by InnerCipher. It is not presented as the only valid school.

1. Check a limited group of special structures

The calculation first tests a small set of specialized conditions. These include concentrated same-element arrangements and certain Heavenly Stem combinations whose transformed element is supported by the Month Branch.

These checks are deliberately limited. InnerCipher does not claim to detect every special pattern described by every lineage, and this article does not inflate rare structures into superior charts.

2. Check Jian Lu and Yue Ren

If no special condition is met, the method checks whether the Day Master reaches its Jian Lu position in the Month Branch. It then checks the Yue Ren position used for the applicable Yang Heavenly Stems.

When one of these conditions is met, the chart receives the Jian Lu or Yue Ren structure label before the regular exposed-stem path is used.

3. Follow the Month Branch Hidden Stems in order

For a regular structure, InnerCipher opens the Month Branch and reads its Hidden Stems in their listed order. It checks whether each one appears among the four visible Heavenly Stems.

The first Hidden Stem that also appears visibly supplies a Ten Gods role relative to the Day Master. That role becomes the regular structure name. For example, if the relevant exposed stem is Direct Officer, the result is Direct Officer structure.

The 12-branch Hidden Stems table provides the exact contents and order used by the current library.

4. Use the main qi as a virtual structure reference when none is exposed

If none of the Month Branch Hidden Stems appears among the four visible stems, InnerCipher uses the branch's main qi to form a regular structure reference and marks it as virtual.

The virtual label has a specific boundary: the main qi supplies the reference, but it was not exposed in the visible stems. It is a method-level summary, not a concealed personality type or a prediction that the pattern will later become real.

Four result families, without a fixed pattern count

InnerCipher does not publish a universal number of patterns because its current set does not represent every BaZi lineage. What matters is how a label was derived, not whether it appears in a supposedly complete numbered catalog.

Worked example 1: a formed regular structure

The Day Master is Gui Water and the Month Branch is Chen. The structure calculation follows these facts:

1. The example does not return a special structure, Jian Lu, or Yue Ren label.
2. Chen stores Wu, Yi, and Gui in that order.
3. The visible stems are Ren, Jia, Gui, and Geng.
4. Wu is not visible. Yi is not visible. Gui is visible as the Day Stem.
5. Gui compared with a Gui Day Master is Friend.

InnerCipher therefore returns Friend structure, a formed regular structure. The label comes from the third Hidden Stem because the first two do not appear among the visible stems.

This result does not mean that Friend is the person's whole personality. It says which month-order relationship supplied the regular structure name under the current method.

Worked example 2: a virtual structure reference

The second example uses 3 January 1988 at 16:00 in the same location and timezone. True Solar Time changes the effective time to 15:44. The Four Pillars are Ding Mao, Ren Zi, Ding Si, and Wu Shen.

The Day Master is Ding Fire and the Month Branch is Zi:

1. The example does not return a special structure, Jian Lu, or Yue Ren label.
2. Zi stores one stem, Gui Water.
3. The visible stems are Ding, Ren, Ding, and Wu. Gui is not among them.
4. Gui compared with Ding Fire is Seven Killings.

InnerCipher returns Seven Killings structure, marked virtual. The label identifies Zi's main qi relationship while preserving the fact that Gui is not exposed.

The virtual tag is the important boundary. It prevents the summary from being read as though an exposed Seven Killings stem had been found, and it does not turn the label into a personality or life judgment.

Chart Structure, strength, and Useful God answer different questions

The first fixture has a Gui Water Day Master strength score of 48, labeled neutral leaning weak. Its Chart Structure is Friend. The second has a Ding Fire score of 6, labeled weak, while its structure is virtual Seven Killings.

These results are not competing answers:

• Chart Structure asks which overall pattern label InnerCipher's current method produces.
• Day Master strength asks how supported or pressured the Day Master is.
• Useful God asks which elements best serve the chart's balancing priorities under the current seasonal, structure, and strength rules.

Common mistakes

Treating a pattern as a life grade

A structure name does not make a chart high class or low class. That language turns a classification into a social or moral ranking it cannot support.

Choosing a label from the Month Branch animal alone

The Month Branch must be opened into its Hidden Stems, compared with visible stems, and translated into Ten Gods relative to the Day Master. The branch name alone skips those steps.

Assuming a virtual label is a secret formed pattern

InnerCipher marks a virtual structure precisely because the relevant Month Branch stem was not exposed. It remains a reference label within this method.

Assuming every school must return the same structure

Schools can differ on priority, exposure, transformation, strength, and which special structures they recognize. A responsible explanation names the method rather than claiming universal agreement.

Where Chart Structure appears in an InnerCipher report

The Free Brief includes basic information, zodiac interpretation, Five Elements analysis, and core Chart Structure. Report generation requires Google sign-in. The Core Pattern section can explain the label with the calculated chart facts, but it cannot turn the pattern into a fixed fate.

The optional one-time Full Report adds Ten Gods analysis, relationship analysis, wealth and career, and annual analysis. Those modules apply the same calculated chart facts to narrower questions. They do not upgrade a structure label into a guaranteed event or a ranking of the person.

Is Chart Structure the same as the Day Master?

No. The Day Master is the Day Stem and the chart's reference point. Chart Structure is a classification derived from the Month Branch and other established chart facts.

Is a special structure always better than a regular one?

No. The label describes a different arrangement under the method. It does not rank the chart or guarantee a better life.

What does virtual structure mean in InnerCipher?

It means none of the Month Branch Hidden Stems appeared among the four visible stems, so the main qi supplied a marked structural reference. It is not a hidden event prediction.
